Panama Girl - Teachers Guide

Many Reading and Writing Strategies can be used with Panama Girl activities for differentiated intruction.   Some of the suggestions that will be enlarged on in this guide are a Reading Response Journal, Literary Circles and Thematic Integration.  This novel is full of themes and jumping off points:   friendship, prejudice through stereotyping, family relationships, fear and courage as well as an opportunity to introduce a country and culture.

Panama Girl is full of  things that matter to a middle grades child  and introduces the shades of gray that challenge and stimulate the reader who has left the primary grades behind.  It is the richness of possibilities that make this story so appealing.

This novel lends itself to integration with many curricular areas such as science, social studies, art, language and music studies.  Teachers should choose those activities that suit their particular student or class best.    There are opportunities for whole class, group and independent work.   The various activities incorporate a variety of ability levels and allow students to demonstrate learning and knowledge through a differentiated ways.
